Product Photography for Reflective Packaging: A Production Guide

Reflective product packaging is where most product photography goes wrong. Not because photographers don't know how to handle reflections — because handling reflections reliably requires a specific production setup that DIY environments can't reproduce.

If your product line includes glass bottles, cosmetic tubes, metallic labels, foil-stamped packaging, or any surface with a glossy finish, the reflection problem isn't solved by better lighting alone. It's solved by controlling what the surface is reflecting.

Here's what's actually happening, and what a commercial production setup does that a phone camera in your warehouse can't.

The physics — angle of incidence equals angle of reflection

Every reflective surface reflects the environment around it at a predictable angle. Your bottle reflects your ceiling, your walls, the photographer, the light source, and whatever's on the shelf across the room. Diffusion softens the reflection so it reads as a smooth highlight rather than a hard mirror image. It doesn't remove the reflection.

This is why moving the light around doesn't fix the problem. Wherever you move the light, the surface is still reflecting a light source — just at a different angle. The reflection follows the geometry.

The three reflection categories

Not all reflective surfaces behave the same way. Technique changes based on what you're photographing.

Specular surfaces (chrome caps, foil labels, mirrored packaging) reflect the environment directly. What you see in the reflection is a reversed image of whatever is in front of the surface. Control here means controlling the entire environment the surface can "see."

Semi-specular surfaces (glossy plastic, satin metal, glass with matte finish) reflect the environment at reduced intensity. Diffusion works better here. The reflection is present but soft enough to read as a highlight.

Mixed surfaces (a bottle with a label, glass with printed graphics, cosmetics with a clear window) combine reflective and non-reflective areas in the same product. These are the hardest because you're managing two exposure requirements: the reflective area needs highlight control, the label needs even, readable light.

What actually works in the studio

Diffusion at scale. A small soft box creates a small reflection with a hard edge. A large diffusion panel — or a scrim wrapping the subject — creates a large soft highlight that reads as controlled rather than accidental. Size matters more than brand.

Cross-polarization. A polarizing filter on the light source combined with a polarizing filter on the camera lens, rotated perpendicular to each other, dramatically reduces specular reflection. It's the technique most photographers know exists and few production budgets can accommodate.

Tenting. Enclosing the subject inside a diffusion structure gives 360-degree control of the reflection environment. The surface reflects only the tent, which is a controlled surface.

Black flags. For surfaces that need to read as clean and dark, black cards placed at the correct angle create dark reflections in the surface. This is how a bottle gets its clean vertical highlights against a dark side — the dark side is a reflection of a black flag positioned to that angle.

Compositing. For mixed-surface products where one exposure can't serve the label and the reflective packaging simultaneously, the answer is two exposures composited in post-production. This is standard commercial practice, not editing trickery.

Where DIY setups fail

The specific failures we see when a CPG brand has tried in-house photography and needs to redo it:

No control of background reflections. Shooting in a warehouse or office means every window, every wall color, every ceiling tile reflects into the surface. The product picks up whatever's around it.

Insufficient diffusion. Household softboxes and continuous lights produce reflections small enough to read as hard highlights. The reflection is present in every shot.

Ambient light contamination. Mixed color temperature — window light plus tungsten plus fluorescent — creates color casts in the reflection that no single white balance can correct.

No compositing capability. Single-exposure workflows can't handle mixed-surface products. Either the label reads too dark or the packaging reads too hot.

Our approach for reflective packaging

Same team, same equipment, same production standard — the reflective-packaging setup adds large-format diffusion, controlled dark and light surfaces positioned to shape what the product reflects, colour-calibrated capture so the finish reads accurately, and post-production compositing when the surface requires it.

For a typical CPG shoot with reflective packaging, we plan two exposures per hero angle — one for surface control, one for label detail — and composite in post. Production time per product goes up compared to matte packaging, but the output is usable across retail listings, e-commerce, packaging decks, and campaign surfaces without reshoot.

When to bring the reflective-packaging job to a studio

If your product line has any of the following, DIY setups will produce inconsistent results:

Glass containers (bottles, jars, ampoules)

Metallic elements (foil, chrome, brushed metal caps)

Cosmetic tubes with reflective bodies

Packaging with mirror finishes or holographic elements

Any product where the packaging is visually part of what you're selling

The question isn't whether reflective packaging can be photographed cheaply. It's whether the images will hold up when placed next to a competitor's product on an Amazon listing or a retail shelf. Reflection control is the difference between a photo that looks like a photo of your product and a photo that reads as your product.
